Celebrating 155 years of family winemaking in Rutherglen

The Campbells Wines story began in Rutherglen in 1870 and is one of evolution, tenacity and determination, building on the experience of generations past with a dedication to innovation.

Campbells was founded by Scotsman John Campbell, who left the goldfields on the advice of the first winegrowers of Rutherglen.

Now 155 years later, the winery he established is for the first time run by two women, sisters, Jane and Julie Campbell, the fifth generation.

Jane is the Managing Director who oversees the company working directly with the Campbells staff and Jules is the Chief Winemaker and custodian of the Campbells brand.

“Wine has been a part of us since we were born. Our company vision is to produce the best possible grapes and create the best possible wine, so that we can provide our visitors and customers the best possible experience at our Cellar Door and through our Cellar Club, with our wines at the forefront.”

“Together, we have a shared vision to champion the region by leading the way with outstanding wines, innovative and progressive practices and an authentic winery experience.”

Since Jane and Julie took the helm, they have added to Campbells traditional Rutherglen treasures and says there is more to come.

“At Campbells we are renowned for being innovative, and we shall continue this trend.”

“Late last year we launched our Light Dry Red, an easy drinking everyday wine that has a lower alcohol content when compared to other Campbells reds.”

A Grenache Rose and Sparkling White have also joined the stable. Recently the winery received the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certificate for its winery and vineyard practices.

The daughters of Colin and Prue, are proud that Campbells is well known for its consistent style across all its wines, as well as being consumer friendly on the palate and not too hard on the budget!

“A family winery is not just the wine in the bottle; it’s the soil under your fingernails, storms and spring sunshine, tears and laughter, and visitors who become family friends,” said Jane.

“We are committed to continuing the legacy of our ancestors for future generations,” Jane concluded.

Campbells Wines is a member of Australia’s First Families of Wines, a group of 10 like-minded and multi-generational winemaking families that are highly respected in the Australian wine industry and around the world.
